    About Me

My research objective is to utilize interdisciplinary knowledge and background in plant breeding, molecular biology, statistical genetics and computing skills to develop efficient and effective breeding platforms for crop improvement. I have immensely enjoyed working in developing countries or region with multiple challenges, which gave me the enthusiasm to aim towards research needs that can impact any crop improvement program. My experience working in two CGIAR institutes (ICRISAT, Patancheru, India; IITA, Ibadan, Nigeria) based in developing countries provided me the opportunity to fulfill my drive and allowed me to develop different skills in training and supervising, ability to work in multi-disciplinary environment, multi-tasking and organizing myself to produce results efficiently even under stressful conditions and short deadlines. My experience encompasses conventional plant breeding and a wide range of state-of-art molecular biology techniques and advanced knowledge of biostatistics and bioinformatics, including cereals, legumes and clonally propagated crops. I have developed core collection of genetic resources by using morphological characterization data as well as molecular data for pearl millet, cassava and yam collections maintained in the gene banks. With the revolution in next generation sequencing techniques and the completion of whole genome sequencing in many crops, the possibility of exploring marker-assisted selection or GWAS and GS is becoming a reality. Towards this development, my special interest is to pursue different approaches including development of molecular markers associated with different target traits including disease resistance, quality and other agronomic and specific traits in crop wild relatives and cultivated species for crop improvement. I have been involved in using crop wild relatives of guinea yam, which is a species complex between wild and cultivated Dioscorea spp., to understand the evolution of guinea yams in West Africa through farmers’ knowledge, morphological characterization and genotyping-by-sequencing. I also keep myself updated with newer technologies related to marker-assisted accelerated breeding including MARS, association mapping, linkage/QTL mapping, functional genomics and other techniques such as RNAseq for gene expression studies, metabolomics, etc. Additionally, my interest lies in building stronger partnerships between different agencies including donors, researchers, NARS partners, ARI’s, private companies and other stakeholders; and capacity building through training and mentoring of graduate students and technical staff both in the field and in the lab. I am PI and co-PI on several bilateral projects ranging from donors such as USAID, BMGF, WCF, NSF-BREAD and others.

    About Me

My long term research interests involve the discovery of novel angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors from casein and the development of novel nanoparticles for cancer treatment. My academic training and research experience have provided me with an excellent background in multiple disciplines including cytobiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and nanoscience technology. As a PhD student, I was able to conduct research on the screening bioactive peptides (especially for ACE inhibitory peptides) using quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modelling and molecular docking analysis from casein combined with the in silico proteolysis technology. As a joint PhD student, my research focused on using novel small molecules that are able to form nanoparticles through self-assembly for cancer treatment. One project is focused on the conjugating an autophagy inhibitor with photosensitizer that forms a nanoparticle for treatment of oral cancer using photodynamic therapy. The combination of autophagy inhibition along with photodynamic therapy has shown promising in vitro and in vivo results and a manuscript is in progress. Another project I will be publishing shortly involves another photosensitizer-conjugated nanofiber that targets the mitochondria. Its application for cancer therapeutics. DNA damage effects on immunotherapy.

    About Me

My best clinical interests are spinal surgery and neurotrauma and these are my usual daily cases I deal with. I want to develop my surgical clinical and research skills in these areas.
In terms of research, I continue at present the evaluation of my work regarding intracerebral haemorrhage and plan to organise similar experiments in the future. I am also interested in expanding my areas of research in experimental traumatic brain injury, oedema and ischaemia. I am keen in revealing early pathophysiological pathways as well as observing the impact of antioxidants. I strongly believe that experimental research should be part every clinical doctor activity. This in my opinion bridges the differences between laboratory and bedside.
In am also quite keen to participate in educational activities and my participation in several courses the last years as a trainer, gave me the opportunity to teach simple technics that are easily applicable, simply performed and quite important for any doctor or student to understand basic but important principles. We still develop our workshops aiming in more involvement by the participants.

  • Hamid Morjani

Hamid MORJANI - Progress in Neurobiology

    Hamid Morjani, Professor

    Biochemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy

    University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne

    France

    Biography

Research works were mainly carried out in the field of "multidrug-resistance" to anticancer drug (1989-2007). This includes ABC transporters expression and anti-apoptotic signaling pathways. Since the beginning of 2004, research interests are focused on the modulation of cell proliferation and drug response by tumor microenvironment (TME). In fact, the limitations of cancer chemotherapy have attributed primarily to cellular mechanisms. However, recent data suggested that TME allows tumor to escape treatment during the first exposure. Two forms have been recently described: the first is called Soluble Factor-Mediated Drug Resistance (SFM-DR) and the second one is called Cell Adhesion-Mediated Drug Resistance (CAM-DR) (Meads et al., Nat Rev Cancer, 2009, 9(9) 665-674).

    Public Health Agency of Canada

    Canada

    Biography

I recently completed the Clinical Microbiology Fellowship training program at the University of Alberta in Edmonton where I developed management and leadership skills in a clinical microbiology laboratory. I am currently working as a Biologist and managing a GRDI-funded project for the development of a novel diagnostic assay using CRISPR-Cas13a as a point-of-care diagnostic tool, which has the potential to disrupt and revolutionize the field of molecular diagnostics. I am also leading several SARS-CoV-2 projects including use of CRISPR-based diagnostics to detect SARS-CoV-2 infection, development of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, and surrogate lentivirus neutralization assays to detect neutralizing antibodies against the spike protein. I have experience evaluating T and B cell immunology and working with animal models (mouse, guinea pig, ferret, and nonhuman primate). I have experience working in a BSL4 laboratory with emerging infectious diseases such as Ebola virus, Marburg virus, avian influenza A (H5N1), Lassa virus, and 1918 pandemic H1N1. Recently, I was involved in diagnostic testing for suspected Ebola virus cases in Canada during the 2013–2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa and was deployed twice to Sierra Leone to help aid Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and its partners with diagnostics for suspect and confirmed Ebola virus patients, as well as demobilization of the on-site laboratory. Additionally, I travelled to Guinea as a consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO) where I installed a diagnostic laboratory and provided technical support for Ebola diagnostics. During my Clinical Microbiology Fellowship at ProvLab in Edmonton, I became an expert in the identification of infectious microorganisms and management of a clinical microbiology laboratory. I also participated in antimicrobial stewardship meetings and outbreak investigations that occurred within Alberta. As exemplified by my experiences, I have a strong interest in diagnostics and infectious disease. I believe I am an excellent fit for the Research Scientist position in National Reference Centre for Mycobacteriology and the experiences I have obtained during my scientific career have helped shaped me to become the ideal candidate for this position.
